I know I’ve kicked the queer-polygamy thing to death, but with the LDS Church mobilizing it’s members in California, I just can’t resist the urge to stir the pot. This appeared today in both the Salt Lake City Weekly and the Salt Lake Tribune. It’s been the top-rated story all day on the Trib’s website with over 300 comments as of this posting. I think this could become a big movement if enough people felt the prompting…

Marriage
for all eternity is being threatened. Many male members of The Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are married to multiple women in
heaven. Even today, prominent LDS general authorities are also
polygamists in heaven. I believe in the importance of eternal marriage;
therefore I would like to propose a "Celestial Marriage Amendment" that
would define marriage in heaven as "one man married to one woman." This
is a moral issue that certainly threatens to undermine the sanctity of
heavenly unions. I encourage all people everywhere to use their time
and means to bring this to pass. After all, I’d hate the LDS Church to
develop a reputation for hypocrisy.

July 17, 1947 – First Presidency letter states: "From the days of the
Prophet Joseph even until now, it has been the doctrine of the Church,
never questioned by any of the Church leaders, that the Negroes are not
entitled to the full blessings of the Gospel. Furthermore, your ideas,
as we understand them, appear to contemplate the intermarriage of the
Negro and White races, a concept which has heretofore been most
repugnant to most normal-minded people from the ancient patriarchs till
now. God’s rule for Israel, His Chosen People, has been endogamous.
Modern Israel has been similarly directed. We are not unmindful of the
fact that there is growing tendency, particularly among some educators,
as it manifests itself in this area, toward the breaking down of race
barriers in the matter of intermarriage between whites and blacks, but
it does not have the sanction of the Church and is contrary to Church
doctrine."
I find this letter to be a relief from the normal casual Mormon bashing
that appears in the the Trib letters and this forum. If only all of
the, often times despicable, daily critics of our predominant religion
had Troy Williams’ wit. I’ll bet this letter gets passed around a few
Bishoprics.
